An exhibition made to educate as much as to be seen

CROSSING TIME presents the paintings of Jamaican-born artist Joslyn Walker-Peart alongside poetry, music and conversation. The works trace a journey from Africa, through the transatlantic triangular trade and plantation life, to Jamaica, migration and settlement in Britain.

Jos Peart made the collection with an educational purpose: a record that communities, schools and families could stand in front of and read together. Themes of memory, displacement, identity, resilience and the African-Caribbean diaspora run throughout.

How the paintings survived

Joslyn Walker-Peart and Pete Goodall were friends. In his later years Joslyn spoke often about what should happen to his paintings, and he left the collection to Pete with a request: that the work should be used for the education of the diaspora.

Pete has kept the paintings together and worked to bring them to audiences who will recognise the history inside them. CROSSING TIME continues that purpose, pairing the works with accessible interpretation and new creative responses.
