    Burial at Sea

    The slave ship and its reflection dominate the painting. Sailcloth appears on the ship but not in the mirrored image, holding a tension between stillness and movement.

    Two oversized enslaved figures dispose of a third who did not survive the journey. Painted in proportion to the ship they would be barely visible and the action easy to miss; by magnifying the scene, Jos foregrounds the horror and reality of the slave trade. On the shore, three enslaved figures including a child stand chained hand and foot, their slightly bowed posture suggesting remembrance and respect, as if recalling their own suffering aboard slave ships.

    Boiling in the Sun

    A hand-operated crane suspends a cage over a large metal pot. Inside the cage a figure hangs head-down as it is lowered into the vessel, suggesting a process of rendering.

    The pot rests above a roaring fire, its contents bubbling, with lugs mounted on either side to allow draining. A figure in a red loincloth operates the crane. Three women in long dresses sit on a log beside a basket filled with bones, a skull resting on top, hands in their laps as they wait in silence: there is no joy in this work. Two empty baskets stand nearby and a small child sits on the ground, also waiting. The unusual perspective of the crane conveys the movement of the process.

    A young, bearded Jos Peart in a traditional seated portrait pose, against an abstract blue-grey background touched with sulphurous browns that creates a cold, damp atmosphere. His hands, almost white with cold, heighten the sense of physical discomfort.

    He wears a grey-brown waxed overcoat with wooden toggle buttons over a wool jumper and brown trousers. Seated on a wooden bench, he rests his pale hands in his lap while his gaze reaches beyond the viewer's left shoulder, suggesting quiet reflection, as though he is looking back across the course of his life. The painting appears to recall his first winter in England after arriving on HMT Empire Windrush in 1948: a cold palette and subdued mood for a season that was bitter, harsh and isolating.
