An exhibition made to educate as much as to be seen
Creative Encounters presents the paintings of Jamaican-born artist Joslyn Walker-Peart alongside poetry, music and conversation. The works trace a journey from Africa, through the transatlantic triangular trade and plantation life, to Jamaica, migration and settlement in Britain.
The collection was made with an educational purpose. Joslyn intended his paintings to be used as a foundation for what he described as “a proper education of the diaspora” — a record that communities, schools and families could stand in front of and read together.
The exhibition is free to visit and open daily throughout October 2026, coinciding with Black History Month.

How the paintings survived
Joslyn Walker-Peart and Pete Goodall were friends. In his later years Joslyn spoke often about what should happen to his paintings, and he left the collection to Pete with a request rather than an instruction: that the work should be used for the education of the diaspora.
Pete has been the custodian of the collection since then, keeping the paintings together, arranging their first public showing and working to bring them to audiences who will recognise the history inside them. Creative Encounters is the next step in fulfilling that request.
